About The Moisture Monitor
The Soil Moisture Project aims to develop a practical and efficient moisture sensor tailored for various outreach programs. This initiative focuses on designing a sensor that is portable, easy to use, and safe, specifically addressing the needs of educational environments and community programs. The sensor will deliver reliable moisture readings, which are essential for monitoring plant health and optimizing water usage across diverse agricultural applications.

Key Features and Design Considerations:
Durability and Material Choice: Since the sensor will be used outdoors and exposed to elements such as heat, UV rays, and moisture, it will be constructed using ASA (Acrylic Styrene Acrylonitrile) filament. ASA is chosen for its resistance to UV rays, water, and chemicals, as well as its ability to withstand extreme temperatures and prevent static buildup, which is essential for protecting the sensor's electronic components.
Sensor Technology: The project explores both resistive and capacitive moisture sensors to determine the most effective and reliable option. Capacitive sensors are preferred due to their resilience against oxidation and more accurate moisture readings. These sensors measure the dielectric property of water, allowing them to provide precise moisture levels in different soil types without the drawbacks of exposed probes.
Client-Centric Design: Feedback from a client survey indicated a need for a portable, easy-to-use sensor with a compact design suitable for storage and transport. The sensor will feature a range of output systems, including LED indicators, an LCD display, and an active buzzer, to alert users to moisture levels. The device is powered by a rechargeable battery to support its portability and ease of use.
Safety and Usability: The design ensures safety and simplicity, making it suitable for users of all ages, particularly younger audiences in educational programs. The sensor's housing is designed to be lightweight and easy to handle, with intuitive controls and clear displays to make operation straightforward.
Data Logging and Analysis: To facilitate long-term monitoring, the sensor will include data logging capabilities, allowing users to track moisture levels over extended periods. This feature is crucial for educational purposes and helps in analyzing the effectiveness of watering schedules and plant growth conditions.
